catch up.

i am slowly catching up on posts from our hawaii vacation. i have posts for the 14th, 15th, and 16th. mostly pictures.  it’s been hard getting back into the swing of things.  i’ve just been really tired lately.  it does get lighter earlier and stay light later, so that’s been really nice.  the day we got back we got a bunch of snow.  my mom was in town for a night so it was nice to hang out with her.

since getting back, i have received some fiber.  i will post some pictures later.  i have been spinning this:

it is the “fiber of the month” for january from lapoli.  i have anxiously awaited this fiber (i knew it was sitting at the post office the entire time i was in hawaii).  this is the first “club” i have joined.  i bought a three month subscription (40z./month) before christmas.  i like to be surprised by the colors – and it’s handpainted!  they were so perfect and bright upon returning to gray, dreary anchorage.

i really like this fiber.  it’s super stretchy and bouncy.  i think i want to ply it with something else to tone down the green.  i’m not really sure.  maybe a light grey (which i don’t have).  any suggestions??  i’m spinning a super light single right now so i really want to ply it with something.  i will post pictures of what i have spun up later this evening.

’til then…

aloha vacation #3. florida (kihei).

February 3-4.

February 3.

we did our last beach day.  i’m so sad that i will not see the beach for months.  months.  that’s such an awful thing to think about.  not even not seeing the beach, there isn’t a whole lot of sun either up here in ak!  😦  time to start popping the vitamin d again!

we went to genki sushi tonight as our last supper.  it was sooo good.  sushi comes out on a conveyor belt and you just grab what you want.  you can also order specialty items from a menu.  it was really good and they had a variety of items.

February 4.

our last day on the island 😦

Before our flight we went out to La Perouse Bay.

our final goodbye.  the best hosts ever.  it will not be 11 years before we see you guys again!  thanks for everything!

goodbye maui.

February 2.

as if our trip couldn’t get any better!  today we went and kayaked with the whales!  it was a wet day, but it was so much fun!  we put in at makena landing and paddled a few miles north – we only got distracted for a little bit as we chased whales.

the put-in.  buku all geared up and cousin gale documenting:

we made it!  that’s gale in the background after documenting our arrival:

they named their kayak “wrangell” since they wish they had her when they lived in wrangell.  the name is very appropriate as it rained for the remainder of the day!

we all napped for the rest of the day (i think i napped for like 3 hours!) and then we BBQ’d at the condo – in the rain!

aloha vacation #3. florida (kihei).

February 1.  Old Lahaina Luau.

we went to the beach in the morning, then spent the evening at the Old Lahaina Luau.

when we were planning our trip to hawaii i had margaret suggest a luau for us.  we aren’t really into tourist things, but this was definitely worth our money and time.  the food and drinks were amazing, our hosts were very friendly.  it was a really beautiful atmosphere and the dancing and entertainment was incredible.

you can see a hint of my body surfing injury on the left side of my face:

i was sooo jealous of this guy in his row-dinghy headed to his boat as the sun set:

unearthing the kahlua pork:

ethan would have been drooling over these beautiful girls.  the men in their little loincloths weren’t so bad either:

we ended up being seated across the table from a couple from fairbanks, ak.  the other two couples at our table were from minnesota.  everyone escaping the winter.

aloha vacation #3. florida (kihei)

January 29-31.

January 29.

we flew to maui yesterday.  we went up to gale and margaret’s cottage to say goodbye to the upcountry.  they have to be moved out at the end of the month.  so, we are staying down in kihei (on the coast) for the remainder of our time in hawaii.  kihei is a busy place with lots of tourists and time-sharers.  it’s not as quiet as upcountry kula, but there is always something going on.  it’s also much warmer and more humid in kihei.

last night we walked around in the evening.  we were (buku was) drawn to a hockey rink where there was a roller-hockey practice.  it was weird to see kids playing hockey in shorts, but wearing full on ice hockey gloves!

today we went to the ‘friends of the library’.  it’s a used bookstore where books are 10 cents!!  take that titlewave!  with books in hand, we hit makena beach where one minute, a big healthy dog was playing fetch in the ocean, the next, he was on the sand dead.  it was so sad.  we found out he was over 15 years old.  what a way to go though – on the beach and happy…

and of course, being in maui, we enjoyed the whales.

January 30. full moon.

today was another beach day – changs beach.  i love maui.

oh, and the australian open (tennis)  is happening this weekend, we are staying up way to late to catch the games!

January 31.

what else?  the beach – Po’olenalena!  we body surfed today.  i was quite proud of myself as i caught this huge wave, then it broke on me, smashing my face into the sand and filling my mouth with the gritty stuff.  i was also blowing sand out of my nostrils.  i came out with small scrapes and bruises on one side of my eye and mouth.  it could have been way worse!

pretty much what we did our entire last week:

with it being sunday, we also headed to little beach (the nude beach) for drumming and the sunset.  it was quite the experience and wish we had gone earlier in our trip.  at least we wouldn’t have tan lines!!  🙂

aloha vacation #2. ethan and oahu.

January 28.

we are sad to be leaving ethan, but maui awaits us for our third vacation, which gale has named “florida” since we will be staying in a condo in kihei.

i took a few photos from our balcony in waikiki.

the international marketplace:

we went up to ethan’s dorm to say goodbye.

he burnt us a cd of local hawaiian music and what he and his friends listen to.  we haven’t taken it out of the cd player in our car!

we miss you ethan!  thanks for spending every minute you weren’t in class with us!  we feel so honored that you ditched your friends and college life (not classes!) for a week!  you made it the best vacation!
